First things first, the roof.

Certifications 101: What Do These Acronyms Mean?

On our Company Profile we have numerous certifications, but what do they mean and what can we legally do with them? SERVPRO is here to explain and to make you feel even better about calling our company to leave your disaster “Like it never even happened.”

First things first, we’re supported by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) firm. The IICRC is a non-profit organization dedicated to the cleaning and restoration industry. With the support of the IICRC, we are able to earn the most legitimate and prestigious training and certificates within the industry. SERVPRO is the structure, and the IICRC is the foundation.

Applied Structural Drying (ASD) Technician Certification:

The ASD is crucial for employees to learn the effective and efficient drying process of structures and foundations impacted by water damage situations. The training for this certificate entails three days of hands-on training, classroom lessons and an encompassing exam. An ASD certificate ensures efficiency, less time on the job and more satisfied customers.

Employee Certification Training Program (ECTP):

The ECTP is a program created by the SERVPRO franchise to continue to evolve the standard of service our customers receive. Certification is granted to SERVPRO employees once they complete each module, which covers crew training, fire restoration, water restoration and carpet and upholstery cleaning.

Lead-Based Paint Activities and Renovation (RRRP):

The RRRP is certified and standardized through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This certification essentially allows us to assess, handle and remove lead-based hazards and damages.

Water Damage Restoration Technician (WRT):

The WRT is a course given through the IICRC that is designed to train employees to better understand the infiltration of water damage, the ensuing effects and the proper and efficient techniques for drying structures. This certification helps expand an employee’s knowledge of contaminations, sewer backups and water losses during a disaster.

Your SERVPRO Lingo: Mitigation vs. Repair

We often find mitigation and repair used interchangeably, but they are two different words for two entirely different services that SERVPRO provides!

The dictionary definition of mitigation is: the action of reducing the severity, seriousness or painfulness of something. So essentially mitigation is the process of treating the site of loss to prevent any further damage or destruction on homes or businesses. SERVPRO’s mitigation process comes in many different forms depending on the kind of loss, but our main goal is ensure our customers are out of harms way as quickly and efficiently as possible. For instance during most water damage scenarios, we mitigate the effected space by opening up walls and removing flooring due to moisture barriers, apply anti-microbial and dry them.

The dictionary definition of repair is: fix or mend (a thing suffering from damage or a fault). So essentially repair is the process of stopping the cause of loss from imposing more damage or destruction on homes or businesses by replacing or returning the damaged source to optimal condition. Depending on the repair process, SERVPRO will directly fix the faulty structure or device or sometimes we will call in our trusted local partners that are more certified or better equipped to handle your disaster. We’re all in this together to make it “Like it never even happened.”

When SERVPRO of Wyomissing thinks about Pete

The SERVPRO brand has been serving the United States since 1967, but SERVPRO of Wyomissing joined the premier cleaning and restoration brand in May 2010.

This franchise grew from a lifelong friendship between Peter Bruni and Michele McEntee. Pete was already a well-established plumber, electrician and real estate agent in the Berks County area. He saw the SERVPRO business as the perfect opportunity to build upon and expand his skills and career, while also helping his neighbors in their time of need. Michele’s experience as a real estate agent and flipping houses, and her ability to comfort people and pets in the time of disaster made her the perfect partner for Pete. The two friends had an understanding and commitment to each other to serve the Wyomissing community, and to leave a legacy for Pete’s family once they realized Pete’s health was in jeopardy. Unfortunately, the Bruni family, SERVPRO and the greater Wyomissing area lost Pete in 2016.

In the face of tragedy and adversity, Michele rose to the challenge, and continues to lead SERVPRO of Wyomissing. She is a great example for all females and aspiring business-owners in the trade industry! Michele attributes her success to her friendship with Pete, her added motivation to continue spreading and living Pete’s legacy and her support system that she says, “This is all impossible without them.”

In 2013, Michele hired a motivated, loyal and dedicated employee named Rodney. She had no idea he would become her right hand man throughout every devastating weather event and disaster. Rodney grew up in the Wyomissing area, and continues to grow under the SERVPRO umbrella. For Rodney, “SERVPRO is family,” and for Michele, Rodney is a new friendship forged.

Now they tackle disasters, clean your homes and take turns bringing furry friend treats to the office! Michele has two cute doggies named Sancho and Cabo. Rodney also has an adorable pup named Mini.

SERVPRO of Wyomissing is way more than just your local fire and water restoration company, it’s all about legacy, respect, family and pet pals more than anything else!

SERVPRO of Wyomissing Sets Up Shop at Hops for Hooves Fundraiser

This weekend SERVPRO of Wyomissing put away the chemicals and moisture meters to support the local community! We had the incredible opportunity to be a vendor at the annual Hops for Hooves festival.

Hops for Hooves is a fundraising event for Grey Muzzle Manor Sanctuary, Inc. Grey Muzzle Manor is a nonprofit initiative geared towards providing a safe and healthy environment for senior animals. They provide adoption services, hospice care and community outreach programs, like Hops for Hooves, to assist older pets in avoiding the shelter system. Grey Muzzle Manor also provides animal assisted therapy so humans and furry friends can receive the love they deserve! Their initiative promotes a wholesome environment, self-love, peace and positivity through animal assisted therapy, art therapy, gardening and other mental health treatments.

We set up a tent this Saturday at the Liberty Fire Company to support this incredible cause. Our team had a bunch of SERVPRO merchandise and we provided a great raffle prize for one lucky winner to snag! SERVPRO of Wyomissing spent the day talking with other vendors and our amazing Wyomissing community, and of course petting all of our furry friends too!

SERVPRO relies heavily on the technology of moisture meters in instances of moisture buildup, whether it is a case of mold or water damage. These instruments are utilized to find damage or potential problems in foundations when there is an increased presence of moisture.

SERVPRO of Wyomissing utilizes two different kinds of meters! We utilize the Techcheck Plus and the Navigator Pro. The Techcheck Plus is easy to use, especially during our various drying jobs. It has a clear and bright digital display that’s very useful in dark places, like a crawl space. It utilizes a 0.1% to 6% drywall scale, and a 6% to 60% wood scale. Our favorite part? The built-in connector accepts any Delmhorst electrode.

We also love the Navigator Pro! It can be utilized for moisture in drywall, insulation, wood, concrete and plaster. It’s super versatile and efficient. We love its feature that provides advanced job definition, which means it organizes readings of the floors, walls and ceilings exposed to high-moisture situations.

Understanding our language helps YOU during a loss.

Certain terminology during emergency situations can be confusing, daunting and an added stress. Although SERVPRO team members do their best to explain and educate in the field, we know our customers like to stay informed throughout the entire process.  Do you want to better understand what is happening in your home or business? Read over these common field terms and explanations used in the Insurance Industry by restoration professionals:

Anti-Microbial Spray: A one-step disinfectant cleaner SERVPRO uses that is specially formulated for the majority of water damage restoration jobs

Contents Budget:A budget set aside by your policy that covers CONTENTS only, such as sofas, clothing, books, dishes, electronics, etc.

Desk Adjuster:The person who authorizes work and pays your claim according to your coverage limits

Drying Process: About a 3-5 day process to dry the structure and/or its contents, until moisture and atmospheric levels have reached a pre-determined goal

Field Adjuster:The person assigned to the loss from your insurance company to determine the scope of restoration work (repairs)

HEPA-500 Air Scrubber: A high-efficiency air scrubber, with a specialized filter capable of removing 99.7% of particles, that is commonly used in mold or odor jobs

Mold spores can spread rapidly

Bleach can actually feed the very persistent mold that is creeping through your house. When it comes to getting rid of this fungus, we are generally accustomed to reaching for the quickest solution: bleach. In an effort to keep our homes nice and clean, we fail to realize we are actually making the problem worse.

Dehumidification is another element to mold removal that individuals may not realize is extremely important. Removing the relative humidity, which causes the mold to grow, halts any further growth.

Mold removal is a lengthy process. You need to identify, any and all, areas of your home or business infected by mold. These areas are usually exposed to high levels of humidity, or wetness, like bathrooms and unfinished basements.

Cleanup may require building materials to be removed, replaced or a combination of both. It is also likely that portions of the property’s walls will need to be opened and cleaned up to really tackle growth that commonly happens within walls, as well.

Wounded Warrior 5K run/walk

This Sunday, December 10, 2017. SERVPRO Wyomissing will be walking in support of Eric's angels. Come join us!

This walk/run for Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) serves veterans and service members who incurred a physical or mental injury, illness, or wound, co-incident to their military service on or after September 11, 2001 and their families. On that date, America watched in horror as approximately 3,000 people died including hundreds of firefighters and rescue workers. Many warriors note a sense of duty to volunteer for the military following these tragic events.

Sept. 11 also served as a stimulus for Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and New Dawn. Operation Iraqi Freedom refers to military operations in Iraq that began March 19, 2003 and officially ended August 31, 2010. Operation Enduring Freedom refers to combat operations in Afghanistan and other regions in support of the Global War on Terror. Operation New Dawn refers to the conclusion of operations in Iraq beginning September 1, 2010 and ending December 15, 2011.

For WWP, there is a distinct difference between members and alumni; the term alumni indicates a mutual shared experience and denotes your place in an organization was earned. There are no dues here - those were paid by wearing the uniform and on the battlefield.

CUMRU TOWNSHIP, PA

A new brewery is HERE in Cumru Township.

Josh Taylor, Lucan Schmidt and Joseph Mastruzzo, all 20-something graduates of Conrad Weiser High School, are opening Schaylor Brewing Co. at 2390 Lancaster Pike, Cumru Township.The building was once a Daewoo dealership and most recently served as a mixed martial arts gym. SERVPRO of Wyomissing is their new neighbor and glad to asssist in anyway to make another small business successful.

The business owners started planning the brewery about a year ago. They have acquired all the permits they need from the township, and recently began construction inside the building. But they await their federal brewing permit.

"We put the idea together and started a business plan about a year ago, and started planning it all out, putting numbers together, and figured out it was feasible to do," said Schmidt, 29. "We then started the ball in motion looking for a place, and now we're doing construction."Taylor, who has worked at Chatty Monks Brewing Co. in West Reading and Reading Carbonics, will be in charge of brewing operations. Schmidt and Mastruzzo will focus on the business side.The brewery has an open layout with a U-shaped bar and additional table seating. The brewing equipment will be located in a front corner, and will be visible to the seating area as well as the outside through large windows."When we were searching for buildings, we came across this one, and we were very excited about it because it was an old car dealership," Taylor said. "We have the big lot so we can expand outside, and we have the wraparound windows so we can display our brewing equipment to people driving by."There will be a kitchen. Schaylor will offer a small food menu, which includes items such as sandwiches and flatbread pizzas.The brewery will be the latest in a line of new businesses to come to the Lancaster Pike corridor in Cumru Township. In recent years, Reading Public Auto Auction, Walgreens, AutoZone, Dollar General and Big Time Thrift Store have all opened nearby.

Getting funky

Schaylor will have eight taps to start, but that will likely expand. Taylor, Schmidt and Mastruzzo are all big fans of India pale ales, so many of the beers will be hoppy, but there will be other styles as well.

"We're going to brew some funky IPAs," Taylor said. "That's what we seek out. But we'll have decent variety, like stouts, Belgians and the whole works, but we'll specialize in IPAs. We're 'hop heads,' so we're going to jam hops anywhere we can in our beers."Schaylor's slogan is "brew outside the lines," so many of the beers will have a twist on them, Schmidt said."It's very nontraditional," he said. "A lot of his best IPAs look like orange juice when you put them in a glass. They're more smooth and less bitter."Schaylor will have several year-round beers, but it will brew many one-time batches, Schmidt said. With only eight taps, that means there will likely be times when certain year-round beers will not be available, he said."One of the biggest things we like to do is constantly brew different kinds of beer," he said. "With all our recipes, there might be a time when a certain flagship won't be on tap."Schaylor will be the seventh brewery in Berks County, joining Chatty Monks, Golden Avalanche Brewing Co. in Kutztown, Hidden River Brewing Co. in Union Township, Oakbrook Brewing Co. in Reading, Saucony Creek Brewing Co. in Maxatawny Township and The Other Farm Brewing Co. in Boyertown.

Our director of first impressions, Peter Bruni, was called home to operate the first SERVPRO of Heaven in  February 2016. Peter is very busy sending us referrals from spouses and family members he has made friends with in heaven.  We consider those direct calls from Peter and we give extra special care to those customers since we KNOW where the lead came from.

Snuggles McEntee was born July 1996. Snuggles was a life long friend and companion. Snuggles was the best nurse we knew. He would lay onto of you so you had to stay home when you were sick for days or weeks at a time.  He also volunteered for mouse patrol when requested and fondly known as Mr. McEntee in his later years.

SERVPRO was formed as a dream of two lifelong friends and 5 puppies. Tuco is the protector. he was born in Nov 2005.  He looks after us and protects us. His job title is security guard.  He does a great job keeping us safe. Tuco is sweet heart but if you bother his favorite people....He has something to say.
